80-to-60-series-alternator-tension-bracket
80-to-60 Series Alternator Tension Bracket

Is your original 55 amp FJ60 alternator lacking? Maybe you've got lots of accessories added to the electrical system, or maybe you're looking for a change on your stock rig. This bracket helps you to install an FJ80 (1991-1992 with 3FE) alternator into your FJ60 with a 2F motor. The bracket is made from powder coated steel.

There are several pieces of this puzzle, but fortunately the lower pivot bracket fits the FJ80 alternator exactly. Using the stock 2F tensioner, however, you'll run out of room before getting the stock size belt tensioned properly. This tensioner bracket provides more room and the appropriate arc so the FJ80 alternator can properly tension the belt.

This is an easy 1-bolt project. Loosen your existing alternator, remove the single bolt holding the old tensioner, then use the same bolt to install the new one. Of course, you'll need to retension your alternator after you're done.

A couple things to note:

This tensioner bracket is NOT the only thing you need to install an FJ80 alternator in your 2F engine bay!

Please read this thread on ih8mud for more information about this alternator swap

When sourcing an alternator, be sure it's for an FJ80 (1991-1992, 3FE), and NOT an FZJ80 (1993-1997, 1FZ)

The electrical connection on the back of the alternator will be different. "Coolerman" on the Mud forum can make a short adapter for you. His website is here and the part number 3P889W. This adapter does not work for all FJ80 alternators, but can be made to work by repinning a connector. More is discussed in the Mud thread linked above.

The pulley that comes with most FJ80 alternators will not work unless heavily modified. I will continue to search for a correct one that I can offer for sale, but in the meantime, see the Mud thread above for workarounds or search for your own based on the shaft diameter and pulley groove width.

The 80A alternator may blow your fusible link, which was only designed for 55A. See the FJ60 Fusible Link Replacement Kit for a solution. If you email me after placing your order for that, I'm able to substitute a fuse of the proper value for an 80A alternator.

If you ever plan on reinstalling your old 2F alternator, just loosen the bolt for this tension bracket slightly, adjust the 2F alternator to get it mostly tight, then fully tighten down the bolt for this bracket, and finally finish tensioning the old alternator. This bracket fits both alternators but the arc is slightly different on each. You may need a longer bolt for the tensioner itself.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0605/8347/7504/files/131F5BB7-BB5E-41AB-8B56-F95E9E5BCEA4.jpg?v=1775350837
